A coilover suspension means not only stiffer settings, better car appearance, or the ability to adjust the height of the car to your taste. Coilovers also have a slightly different design from OEM components. It is enough, however, to follow a few basic rules to make the MTS Technik set correctly installed and serve for a long time.
The previous blog post was an example of a properly carried out suspension replacement in BMW E30. Naturally, some of the suspensions differ in their construction. There are, however, some points common to each set.
The first error may appear already at the time of purchase. The car’s version variety is very wide. The car may differ not only in the body but also in the mounted engine or the type of drive used. And this affects the weight of the car or the construction of its suspension. In some cases, coilover sets differ from each other by individual elements, adapted to the specific version of the car. If you are not sure whether a given set will be correct, it is worth contact
the MTS Technik advisor. Professional help will avoid unnecessary nerves.
Once the kit has been selected, it is time to assemble it. The relevant bolt tightening points are important here. The force should be properly selected so as not to damage the surface of the threaded fasteners of the shock absorbers. If in a given car the shock absorbers differ physically depending on the mounting side, you should strengthen your vigilance. MTS Technik shock absorbers have markings. “L” for the left side (driver) and “R” for the right side (passenger).
MTS Technik coilover struts are covered with double anti-corrosion layer. And the black anodising protects the aluminium rear height adjustment. This allows effective protection against corrosion. After assembly of the coilover suspension, however, it is worthwhile making it easier to adjust the height of the car later. The PTFE teflon dry grease, which is worth spraying the threaded surfaces of the set, is useful.
Suspension height adjustment should only be carried out with the spanners attached to the set. This will avoid damage to the spring perch and keep the ability of car’s height correction, for example in the winter.
After mounting everything, it is worth checking if the new suspension and the changed height of the car do not interfere with the free rotation of the wheels. A heavily lowered car will always be eye-catching, but full service above all! As with the wheels, the same with the upper mounts of the shock absorber – the final tightening should take place when the car is on wheels and all its weight lays on the suspension.
When everything has been bolted and checked, and the first pictures of the lowered car are already on the social media, the last important step should be taken towards the trouble-free operation of the car on coilovers. You should check and correct Your wheel alignment. Each interference in the suspension introduces confusion in the factory settings. Tilting away from normal cause faster tire wear and often inappropriate car reactions. Their correction will lead to full driving pleasure and a better feeling of every turn. And this is what the coilover suspension was created for.
